Brandie Wilkerson’s Career as a Volleyball Player
Brandie Wilkerson started playing indoor volleyball at York University, where she won multiple awards, including CIS second-team All-Canadian in 2011–12 and OUA first-team All-star. She switched to beach volleyball in 2013 after being influenced by the London Olympics in 2012. She made her international debut in 2016 when she was selected as an alternate for Team Canada at the Rio Olympics.
When she teamed up with Heather Bansley in 2018, she made her breakthrough. Wilkerson was named the FIVB Best Blocker that year, and the two of them topped the FIVB world standings. The two made it to the quarterfinals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which were rescheduled from 2021 owing to the pandemic.
Wilkerson and Sophie Bukovec made headlines on the international scene in 2022 after capturing a silver medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rome. They were the first Canadian women’s team to go to the event final thanks to this performance.
Together, Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes created one of the world’s most competitive beach volleyball teams by 2024. They achieved the greatest Olympic outcome ever for a Canadian women’s beach volleyball team by taking home a silver medal from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Beyond tournaments, Wilkerson was a co-founder of Project Worthy, a scholarship program that supports BIPOC youth volleyball in Canada. She is also a member of the Wilson Advisory Staff, which helps to innovate beach volleyball equipment. In addition to her physical prowess, Wilkerson has distinguished herself throughout her career by advocating for diversity in sports and exercising leadership.
